We have yet to spring for an apartment on this trip (feels like we're always making bookings completely last minute!) but we do it very often traveling in the States. A few years ago, we rented a houseboat in Amsterdam for 10 days. It was a huge savings over any budget hotel, and our digs absolutely rocked. We also second renting a car. It seems in the RTW blogger community, folks get a lot of flack for traveling this way, but for us the total freedom results in epic adventures. The price easily compares with point-to-point transportation, and we save so much time not waiting for trains and buses. Great tips guys!
